Dr. Robert H. Bitzer ( 1896 - 1994) Founder and Spiritual Director of the Hollywood Church of Religious Science, was a Master Teacher of Metaphysics and Religious Science, and Rev Bates' first exposure to the science of mind teaching.
Dr. Domenic A. Polifrone became the Spiritual Director of the Hollywood Church of Religious Science in 1995, merging his New Thought Center of Los Angeles with the church. Dr. Polifrone was one of the Founding Board Members of the Affiliated New Thought Network (ANTN). Rev Bates studied four years with Dr. Polifrone and began preparatory ministerial studies with him, and continues to be inspired by him today.
Dr. O. C. Smith (1936-2001) With his wife, Dr. Robbie Golshan-Smith, Dr. O. C. Smith founded the City of Angels Church of Religious Science in Los Angeles. After a highly successful music and entertainment career ("God didn't Make Little Green Apples") Dr. O. C. created a very successful ministry demonstrating his consciousness of success and his tremendous love for everyone. Rev Bates turned to Dr. O. C. Smith for Advanced Ministerial Studies and was inspired by Dr. O. C. to make ministry his life's work.
Reverend Dr. Juanita Bryant-Dunn (-Sept. 3, 2009) Rev. Dr. Henry Lee Bates was honored to be one of the students in her first Ministerial Class at City of Angels Church of Religious Science for the 2001/ 2002 Term. Dr. Juanita Bryant-Dunn was a modern mystic and a powerful teacher of spiritual principles.

Rev Bates, living the Way to a Wonderful Life
My first exposure to the science of mind came in 1991 when I walked into the Hollywood Church of Religious Science, not knowing what to expect. Having been brought up in the First Baptist Church of Paris, Missouri and then converting to Catholicism in my 20s, I was enthralled with Dr. Bitzer's Sunday presentation. He was saying everything that I had come to believe with all my heart but no minister/priest/pastor had ever spoken these words before to me. I knew instinctively that this was the "true religion of Jesus" a teaching that was absolutely Jesus' philosophy. And this was exactly the way it felt ... like Dr. Bitzer was talking to me personally reinforcing all that I had come to believe and understand about our relationship to the Infinite. Sometime during his 20-minute lecture, I knew I had found the "Truth that could set me free."
